Over the past ten years, Canada Xing Wu Temple has always adhered to the original intention of “respecting the elderly, honoring the virtuous, and promoting filial piety”. Every year, it carefully prepares and invites the elderly to enjoy a free lunch, and gives each elderly guest a blessing bag and longevity noodles, which symbolize health and longevity. Elders over 90 years old were given the Chinese character “Shou” written by Master Shi Xing Wu, and elders over 80 years old were given the Chinese character “Fu” as a token of respect and blessing.

The organizers specially invited Mayor Malcolm Brodie and  his wife, City Councillor Chak Au, community leaders and social elites to gather together to witness this milestone moment. What was even more eye-catching was that a 102-year-old centenarian and several elders in their 90s came to the scene to celebrate with everyone, adding more meaning and good wishes to the entire event.

Master Xing Wu said in an interview with the media: “For the past ten years, we have always adhered to our original intention. We hope that through the Zen Heart Respect for the Elderly Longevity Banquet, the Chinese filial piety culture can be passed on overseas, more young new generations can join in and continue the inheritance, and more elders can feel the care of the society and the compassion of Buddhism. In the future, we will continue to hold such activities and contribute to the harmonious development of the community.”
Looking back over the past ten years, the Zen-hearted Respect for the Elderly Longevity Banquet has not only become a tradition in the Chinese community in Canada, but also carries the filial piety and kindness of generations. This is not only a charity banquet, but also a continuation of a culture. The culture of filial piety of respecting the elderly and honoring the virtuous is widely spread and promoted overseas. Looking into the future, Canada Xing Wu Zen Temple will continue to practice respecting the elderly with a compassionate heart, so that this warmth can continue to be passed on. See you next year!
